Our Mission

To commission new musical compositions by outstanding contemporary composers that will be premiered and played by outstanding musical ensembles, in order to capture in music the sounds and emotions that scientists experience in medicine, the life sciences, the physical sciences, and engineering.

Sensory hair bundles vibrate in response to sound, converting movement into ion currents and then into chemical signals in the auditory nerves that connect to the brain, where the perception of the sound of music occurs. This scanning electron microscope image is reproduced with permission of researchers Peter Barr-Gillespie and Kateri Spinelli at the Oregon Health & Science University, Portland, OR.
