Mission
To commission new musical compositions by outstanding contemporary composers that will be premiered and played by outstanding musical ensembles, in order to capture in music the sounds and emotions that scientists experience in medicine, the life sciences, the physical sciences, and engineering.
Goals
SoSCC seeks to discover the subtle harmonies of science through innovation in music. We want music that allows us to savor the experience of science to augment the explanations that we create. With composers and performers, SoSCC seeks to explore resonance and balance in the natural world, and to harvest a rich bounty of sonority from the seeds of imagination and experimentation.
Topics of Interest
The natural world abounds with opportunities. Much as earlier composers wrote music inspired by rivers, countryside, visits to Scotland, strolls in art galleries, the sea, gnomes and trolls, mythology, sailing ships and sunken cathedrals, there is an entire world of laboratory and medical sciences to capture and interpret through music.
Venues and Co-commission
SoSCC has established relationships with composers, performers and presenters, including NOVA Chamber Music Series in Salt Lake City, the Fry Street Quartet, the Utah Symphony, Third Coast Percussion, The Gryphon Trio, Nordic Voices, Augusta Read Thomas, Jon Kulpa, Libby Larsen, and the Friction Quartet in supporting and commissioning original works that inspire our spirits and energize our imaginations.
Current Projects
SoSCC will explore everything from black holes to wound healing, from how proteins fold to global sustainability. Nothing is off-limits! We are limited only by our imaginations.
